Eino Ilmari Juutilainen (Lieksa, February 21, 1914 - Tuusula, February 21, 1999) was a Finnish aviator. 

Fighter pilot and officer dell'Ilmavoimat, the Finnish Air Force, is not a German flying ace with the highest number of culls in history. They have recognized the 94 confirmed aerial victories, obtained during 437 combat missions conducted against the Soviet Air Force in the Winter War, in 1939-40, and later, against the Allied air force in the Continuation War in 1941-1944 . However, he claimed a greater number of culls (126), 34 of which obtained at the controls of the poor fighter Brewster B239.

Juutilainen has, to date, the Finnish fighter pilot with the largest number of aerial victories. He piloted the Fokker D.XXI, the Brewster Buffalo and the Messerschmitt Bf 109.

It was one of four people who were decorated with the most important Finnish decoration, the Cross of Mannerheim. Juutilainen finished the war without his plane had ever been hit by enemy aircraft fire (once was forced to land after its Bf 109 was hit by friendly fire). Like the other two main areas of hunting, the German Erich Hartmann and Japanese Saburo Sakai, Juutilainen never lost a wingman. His brother Aarne Juutilainen was distinguished in Morocco with the French Foreign Legion.

Biography :

As fighter pilot : 

Juutilainen entered in the Finnish army September 9, 1932, but undertook the pilot activities nell'Ilmavoimat starting from 1935. On 1 May of that year he was in fact promoted Sotilasmestari (Chief Petty Officer) and then passed to LeLv 24 (Lentolaivue) the 24 March 1939. This unit was operating from Utti and in October 1939, with the situation worsening, he moved to Immola, closer to the Finnish-Soviet border. Shortly 
thereafter, on November 30, the Winter War broke out. During this conflict, Juutilainen flew a Fokker D.XXI. During this conflict, Juutilainen scored two individual victories and in collaboration.

During the Continuation War he served the army piloting a Brewster B239, which he dubbed "Orange 4" (serial number: BW-364) and with which struck down 28 enemy aircraft.

With the rank of sergeant, he obtained his first victory December 19, 1939, knocking down an Ilyushin DB-3 bomber and damaging two others. On December 31, after several other clashes, he ran for the first time in a Polikarpov I-16, which precipitated the forest below. Later he piloted one of these aircraft, spoils of war, and expressed much praise for the Soviet fighter, especially for its ability to perform very tight turns. Juutilainen became an "ace of Buffalo" (that is, obtained five wins air at the controls of the fighter Brewster) July 21, 1941 when it precipitated a Polikarpov I-153 while he was piloting a Buffalo of the 3rd Squadron of the LeLv 24 (3 / Lelv 24) , alzatasi flying to intercept the Soviet fighters that were strafing the 65.ShAP Finnish troops near Kakisalmi. On the morning of February 6, 1942 took off, under the captain's orders Per-Erik Sovelius and six other pilots of the 3rd and 4th squadron of LeLv 24 to carry out a survey in the Petrovskiy-Jam region. During the mission they met seven Tupolev SB bombers escorted by 12 MiG-3. In short fight that ensued, two destroyers and two bombers were shot down, the latter, both by Juutilainen. So later he recalled one of his most memorable fights:

I spotted the bombers to 3,000 meters, and warned the other guys on the radio. As soon as we intercepted the bombers, the last three direct SB to a nearby rail line and leapt dive in pursuit. I selected you to the left, and my volleys burnt the port side wing. The SB rushed near the railway line. Soon after I attacked the plane ahead of the training, but I saw a MiG rushing against me. Despite the threat posed by this hunt, I managed to hit the second bomber to the starboard engine, which began to emit smoke and oil. Moments later, the plane tipped over to the right and fell among the trees at the side of the tracks. At that point riservai my attention to the MiG, which was above me. I managed to shoot him while we were running meeting. My aim was good and the hunt began to emit smoke from the engine. The MiG leaned turn eastward, losing altitude. March 28, 1942, Juutilainen became the first rider LeLv 24 to get 20 knockdowns during the Continuation War. To these results he was awarded the "Cross of Mannerheim" April 26, 1942.

September 20, 1942, Juutilainen and five other riders, under the command of Captain Jorma Karhunen, all of the 3/24 LeLv were patrolling the area Kronstadt-Tolbuchin-Seskar when, approaching the coast of Estonia, were attacked by ten fighter. However, the Finnish pilots, veterans of many dogfights, soon turned the cards in their favor, knocking down three Soviet aircraft. Juutilainen, commanded by Brewster BW-364 claimed two victories air:

"I followed Captain Karhunen in the attack after they were attacked by ten MiG and Spitfire. We pawned fighting and managed to shoot a Spitfire during turns. Juutilainen piloted its Model 239 BW-364 "Orange 4" until February 1943. At the controls of the fighter Brewster claimed 28 of the 34 victories he obtained with Buffalo (including three triple killing in a single day), between July 9, 1941 and 22 November 1942.

In 1943, he was transferred to LeLv 34, where he used the new Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-2. With this new aircraft, he shot down more than 58 aircraft opponents. It was proposed for a promotion but refused fearing that raising the grade would prevent him to continue flying. On 28 June 1944 he was awarded a second "Cross of Mannerheim".

Her latest and 94th victim was a Lisunov Li-2, the Soviet version produced under license from the Douglas DC-3 shot down September 3, 1944 on the Isthmus of Karelia

Postwar Period :

At the end of the conflicts he continued nell'Ilmavoimat service until 1949 and then, after retiring, he worked as a professional pilot until 1956 transporting people aboard his biplane de Havilland Tiger Moth. In 1997, at 83, flew for the last time on a military plane, a fighter-bomber F / A-18 Hornet of "his" Ilmavoimat.

Juutilainen died on his eighty-fifth birthday February 21, 1999.
